Should all unpublished scientific data be made freely available?

  • Yes: science will advance more quickly if all scientists can see what other scientists are doing
  • No: individual scientists would lose out if competitors stole their data and published more quickly
  • Middle ground: general results and methods should be made public, but sensitive, easy-to-replicate data could be kept secret until the researcher publishes it
